A father’s lesson on legacy

By Pedro J. Rivera, Esq., Senior Director for Individual Giving, UnidosUS

Pedro Rivera’s father, a Korean War Veteran.

My father, a Korean War Veteran and a member of the 65th Infantry, a Puerto Rican regiment of the United States Army, was always grateful to organizations that helped veterans. He was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, and was raised on a farm by his maternal grandfather. As a child, I remember him being involved in fundraisers for our parish or our sports team. He was blessed and reminded us that we must help those less fortunate than ourselves. Giving is an act of generosity. He would tell us, “en la vida hay que dar para recibir” (in life, you must give to receive). He was one of my earliest examples of donating to causes you care about. At the end of each year, I would see him make his donations to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization that helped many former soldiers just like him.

Welcome Message from Janet Murguía

I am pleased to share the first issue of Unidos Impact, a quarterly newsletter reporting back to you, as donors to our Campaign for Equal Opportunity, how your investment is strengthening UnidosUS and bolstering transformational efforts to define a new Latino narrative, scale our work for maximum impact, and elevate Latino leaders, the three goals of the Campaign.

But first, I have to say THANK YOU! You believed in the vision of our Campaign for Equal Opportunity and helped us take the first bold steps toward building a stronger America where all Latinos flourish. Because of your leadership and support, we surpassed our goal raising over $56 million, and I am so grateful for your trust, confidence, and investment in UnidosUS.

Your investment at work

UnidosUS launched the Campaign for Equal Opportunity, a milestone fundraising effort to celebrate our 50th anniversary, history of leadership, and ensure our vision of a stronger America where everyone, including Latinos, have an equal opportunity to succeed. Thanks to your generous investments, we raised more than $56 million, 12% over our $50 million goal!

Since the campaign kicked off, we have mobilized your investments to begin fulfilling our vision through three ambitious goals: to define a new Latino narrative, to scale our work, and to elevate Latino leaders.

Leading by Example: Fred R. Fernandez

Fred R. Fernandez has been part of the fabric of UnidosUS for almost as long as the organization has existed. As a donor, former board member, and a long-time representative for UPS on the Corporate Board of Advisors, Fred’s dedication to, and involvement with, UnidosUS has spanned almost 40 years.

Oftentimes quietly, and behind the scenes, his philanthropy, strategic support, and leadership have deeply and meaningfully impacted our work. When UnidosUS launched the 50th Anniversary Campaign for Equal Opportunity in 2018, Fred, and his wife Irma Rodriguez, stepped up to be among the first to donate during the campaign’s quiet phase. Fred also enthusiastically volunteered to do more.

Our President and CEO Janet took him up on his offer, asking him to join former UnidosUS Board Chair Jose Villarreal as co-chair of the campaign. Thanks to the dedicated leadership of Fred and Jose, UnidosUS exceeded the campaign’s original goal of $50 million, a historic achievement that will impact our work – and millions of Latinos – for years to come.

Saluting Our Donors

When we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2018, we launched a campaign to raise $50 million by Dec 2020, to prepare us to lead into the next half century. We kept a strong pace in our fundraising allowing us to respond to the immediate challenges of 2020, and in the end we also surpassed our goal raising a total of $56 million.

Thank you to our funders and donors whose leadership and support ensures that UnidosUS can achieve our vision of equal opportunity for the Latino community.
